Do some espionage (anonymous phone calls, whatever it takes) and get a real contact at the company. Skip HR if you can.
Paste a text version of your resume at the bottom of every email to HR so the person doesn't have to open your attachment.
This article has some more unconventional job hunt tactics because with everyone desperate the old "please look at the attached resume" just isn't cutting it.

As a career coach, # 5 and #15 are particularly important.
Regarding online identity, consider what you want your personal brand is or is going to be. If unsure, go to reachcc.com/brandquiz and take the quiz. It's free. More employers are checking social media sites to find out job seekers' personal brands and online identities. Make them count in your favour if you are job searching.
#15 Standing apart is CRUCIAL in today's job search and down economy.
I constantly remind people that this is mandatory in a fiercely competitive market. Check my blog:webinarcareercoach.blogspot.com and check out Kevin Donlin's Guerrilla marketing job search system which is recession proof.
