My intent is certainly not to discredit those who are simply unable to get out of the cycle.
I have seen #2 with my own eyes - some people simply enjoy living in "emergency mode" and refuse to save, even when they can. Whatever the underlying reasons, they stay as far away from a calm financial life as possible.

Kelly – you’re absolutely right, and I would agree that the majority does not enjoy the experience, which is why I titled the point “getting a thrill…”. There may be some people who get a thrill out of living paycheck to paycheck, but the overwhelming majority are doing it because a) it's hard to make a living on minimum wage b) they (or other family member) have been laid off c) have huge medical bills (despite being insured!) d) have student-loan debt and not much left for saving after paying that. And many other reasons. I don't suppose may of them enjoy not knowing whether they'll be able to pay their and their kids' grocery bill.

I agree with most of them, but find #2 quite harsh.
